PPC click through rate commonly known as CTR is a technique used to determine the success rate of an internet advertisement. In other words, CTR is the result of an online advertisement that is calculated by dividing the number of users who click on an advertisement by the number of times the ad was displayed (impressions). CTRs are usually shown in terms of percentage rather than raw numbers because it is easier for the user to monitor the success of an ad campaign over time. The click through rate directly affects the quality score of your PPC campaign. The higher the CTR, the more successful the campaign is performing.

CTR is immediate and not an overall response to an advertisement. Simply getting visitors to a web site used to be significant when web site traffic was all it took to evaluate their success. The preference towards effectiveness and efficiency, along with improved tracking tools, has led to reduced interest in click-through rates and added interest in conversion rates.

A high click through rate alone is not an indicator that your conversion rate is going to be higher. These two rates can be completely different. An advertisement that is just getting curiosity clicks will result in less sales, percentage-wise, than an advertisement which is geared towards relevant and interested clicks.

The CTR history is considered and even though the keywords history holds importance the latest CTRs are more important and act like an additional incentive to keep improving the advertisement campaigns.

The click through rates differs with different advertisement rankings.

The discrepancy in advertisements positions is taken into consideration and leads to a change in the CTRs.

Usually the more precise and specific a search term is, the better the CTR is as they match what is being searched.

Broad keyword search terms usually are presumed to have a lower CTR, because they are not as targeted to what a searcher is looking for, therefore, are considered not as relevant. Keeping in consideration the search terms used, the CTR number may be measured as low or high, where as 0.9% may be acceptable for a broader search term, but very low for a targeted search term.

All in all a high CTR is a measure of how well your advertisement is performing. If your CTR is low that is an indication that tweaking is needed to boost it.

Now, I don't mean this to be mindless self-promotion (although it all helps of course!), but more of an attempt to get some SME's to think a little more logically about the management of their AdWords campaigns with a short example.

A small trader with a new e-commerce store came to me in February for a quote on managing his AdWords campaign. His store is a (very nicely designed) niche online gift store and he had been managing his own campaign with little success in terms of sales and he had got to that point (that I see very often) where his CTR was almost non-existent, his quality score was poor and his click prices had gone through the roof. His adgroups (and keyphrases) were illogical, his ad-copy all wrong, etc, etc...

His average cost per click was 37p and most of those were not targeted correctly. Suffice to say, he had no REAL idea as to how it was performing other than to say his sales were non-existent.

In short, it was a mess.

Anyway, when I first spoke to him on the phone, in the first minute he said the words that I never, ever, ever understand.

He said something like... 'well the problem I have now is that I can't afford to spend much on Adwords'.

Hmmm... To that I said what I normally say...

[me] 'OK... well, if you could find a way of buying 50 pence for 40 pence would you do it'?

[him] Err... yes... obviously...
[me] 'And how much could you afford to spend on doing this?'
[him] *Laughs* - as much as i could buy...'

The Point? Well, if an AdWords campaign is correctly managed, this is possible, and in his case, is actually doing so. Less than 3 months on, his average click price is 24p, but, and here's the killer part, we know that, on average, EVERY click is making him a profit.

How? Firstly, it's about knowing how to manage an AdWords campaign (obviously), but less obviously, it is about measuring the performance of your ads and doing so constantly. You can use Google Analytics to tell you exactly what return in terms of revenue each click gives and so once you have done this, you can see what a click is worth, and if you see what a click is worth, you know how much you will pay. After sufficient testing, If you know that a click on a certain keyword, consistently results in an average profit of 50p per click, then you know what to pay up to.

So, in summary, if you are inexperienced with Adwords and need a single piece of advice, make very sure that you have installed Analytics and that you KNOW how to measure your campaigns performance.

It can be just like 'buying profit'.

If you are starting in the online world and are contemplating which domain to go for, consider one with target phrases, assuming both relevancy to your business name, and uses no more than a single hyphen. While multiple hyphens in a domain can be successful, they are very common with highly spammy websites, so it is best to not take these routes if possible.

While having a keyword located within domain name can provide some ranking juice, I would not suggest heading out and doing a domain swap. In most cases you would be better off working on existing sites than starting from scratch with a new domain.

Keywords in page specific URL
Using keywords for specific page URL's can also help add a little bit of value to your site, providing you use them responsibly. Consider using a keyword as a directory name and as part of a file name where it naturally makes sense to do so. Link Anchor text
This is the actual text you clíck on as part of a link. When full or partial target phrases are used within text links they help pass on some value to the linked page for those phrases. "Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some f the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Here's a predication that I know will irritate the technically oriented Kings of SEO: Looking hard into my crystal ball, as one does, I reckon that their days are numbered and that they are a dying breed! Now before the techies swarm around LeadGenerators HQ with pitchforks and flaming torches ready to silence the web-marketing heathen, allow me to explain...

In my mind, instead of technical considerations dictating what we should try to achieve, we marketing managers should dictate what we want and then find the technical solutions to achieve it. I know that this attitude annoys the technocrats who seem to dominate the online marketing world, but my approach has proved successful in its own right.

I have always seen SEO as a two-stage process. The first is to make sure that a client's website is search engine friendly. This process analyses the structural elements of the site to make sure that search engines are able to see ALL the pages of the site and are able to rank (judge) each page in its own right. It's a lengthy analysis that covers many aspects of the site but it's largely a one-off project. Once done, and once the site has been improved accordingly, the techies' work is more or less done.

The larger, second step is all-important and all about the content of the site itself.

For a site to achieve good rankings, we need to first select the right keywords. I won't go into the science of keyword research and selection, but once the best ones have been selected for a client, we need to move into the realm of writing, sprinkling certain keywords strategically throughout the text and the code of each page. This is an ongoing process which we divide into what we call 'streams'. A few of the major streams to improve the rankings of each page for its specific keyword mix are:

* KEC: The process of enriching the texts in the site with the right amount of keywords and phrases.

* Coding: Adding in the right keywords for each page into the meta tags.

* Links: (reciprocal and one way): Getting good links from other sites that are well ranked for the same keywords that we are using. This includes forum participation, involvement in social media and other elements of Web2.0.

* Web PR: Submitting keyword rich articles to the syndicated news feeds for the purposes of achieving both links and market exposure.

The common denominator for all the above tasks is good writing and communication skills, combined with good old-fashioned common sense, which most technically minded people aren't best suited to provide. It is the writers and communicators - not the programmers - who have delivered our best results in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Well, we know a few ideas that might help. 1 is the # of back links to your web page. If this is NOT a key one for search engines, it will definitely bring you more traffic. Well that is the objective anyway. The only reason that people want TOP 10 or TOP 5 on SERPs is because that is where majority of people start as their entry point into the networld. Well, if back links or reciprocal links works, I suppose one can just focus on that. EVENTUALLY it will generate so much traffic you might not even care if you are on TOP 1o with SERP.

Ok, so that is one theory and probably a good one. If you do link exchanges with relevant or related category sites to help netizens bounce from one site to another why isn't this good enough? Actually it is!!! It can bring you plenty of traffic and make you really happy :) Well, why don't people just do that then? Well, like I said somehow people have to land on a page where your link is. Well, isn't that one way? Maybe you cannot get a SERP to land on your page directly and why does it have to be on the first click? Can it be a referral link? That is by the way a powerful form of advertising?

Well, in fact probably even stronger and the 1 thing I can say about that is Search Engines apparently disregard reciprocal links because it "Cuts" them out of the loop. They hate it, because there's absolutely no reason for people to do a loop back to a search engine page because there's nothing there but to start a search over again. Search engines absolutely hate reciprocal links. It creates a network within the network that they get cut out of completely and that is not good for their ratings. But IT does work!!! For your objective you should maintain activity in this regard because it will create a lot of traffic for your website.

Search engines crawl your site, they will look around, record your meta tags, snapshot the page contents to hopefully know what your site is about. They will also do a few other measurements while they are there. They will count how many links you have going out to external, the will try to count how many indexed pages they have that link back to you, compile some other figures, see who else you are linked to and see what their index score is, see who is linked back to you and see what their link score is and then with some hidden formula determine your index score.

This index score is the most important value. How they derive to this score is somewhat in your control, but how they compile it we have no control. So based on the keyword you search and the millions of search results they display the search results in order descending from the highest index score to the lowest. This has to be the way it is. If your score slips or someone gains on you, it is usually only be 1 or 2 positions that I have seen at any given time. Yes a whole bunch of pages can make a leap forward and push you down a few pages.

This the # 1 reason you have to continuously work at building your rank and it is the # 1 reason why our SEO packages are all monthly. I want to dive further into search engine marketing because as we described in our previous article that the human interface into the vast amount of information on web pages is the search engine and the index they keep.

Well, it is quite obvious now that there are billions of pages out there and maybe not as many keywords. When you search a keyword on a search engine you will retrieve millions of search results and the more detailed or specific you are the fewer results the engine turns up.

So what angle does one focus on in showing up in the TOP 10 SERPs? I would have to say both, but a strategy to achieve this can be implemented nicely. The simple part of search engine optimisation is building the web pages. There is no science, rhyme or reason in building the web page anymore. There are a few key basic rules to follow, having good quality interesting content is one of those rules and I should also mention that the more relevant the content is to the keyword map on the page the more the search engine will like you.

Well, for the most part we are all ethical and honest so the keyword and content match up is not an issue. What becomes the next most difficult challenge is learning how the search engine displays the millions of search results from a keyword search.

So there's 2 angles here. Playing in the field with the millions and playing in the field with the hundreds. Playing in the field of the hundreds is an easier battle and should be tackled first. How do search engines build their search results with in hundreds of a second display or prepare you a list of millions of site links from their index and even sort them in a way that displays what they would call most relevant first?

Well, this has to be pre-calculated or they have some kind of super computer equipment that can compile this data over and over again each time someone punches in the same keyword. I think not. Each entry in the search engine index has to have a value. Prior to displaying you the search results that you requested, the search engine will build a temporary storage area and put your search results into that list based on index id value. Then you can freely page through that list until you close your page and the list is released.

So how do they compile that list? The engine that finds all the pages that have similar content based on your keyword comes from their pre-made index of every page on the internet. It would be the ONLY way they could return you their search results so quickly and still have time to sort them.

When a search engine crawler (bot) goes through your site it assigns it a score. Now we figure that the site is evaluated at this time and given that score and the more often it crawls your site is when you get an opportunity to change this score on the search engine index record. So you have to do 2 things. Find out when the engine has crawled your site, and it frequency and that will give you an indication of how much time you have to improve your website optimisation so that the next time it crawls the site, it will give you a better score.

I have been wanting to write for a few days now, but for some reason I have been having a mental block because I have so many ideas in my thoughts that I don't want to scramble them all into 1 article.

We have read many articles and done much research on search engine marketing. The most annoying part is that we have found some contradicting theories around search engine marketing. For example, for a long time now, we have found from many different internet articles that placing high on the SERP for Google required activities surrounding page optimization.

So, today I want to lay out how we see the internet search engines and how search engine marketing should be viewed. In order to be able to do this, we have to see that there is a bridge between the human and the information found on web pages.

The objective the people the publish the web pages is to have more people visit them. The objective of the human is to find the information they are looking for. I think by now we know that using a computer is a requirement, but if we take that 1 step further, we will see that the only thing that has provided this electronic bridge to the information up to now is search engines. Since most people surf now to find information, I think other advertisement mediums are effect in driving traffic and the only 1 other method of driving web site traffic that I believe works strongly is word of mouth.

So if we ignore all methods of promoting web site traffic and hone in on search engine marketing, the little rectangular box we see on Google, Yahoo, MSN and the myriad of other search engines is the window into the vast amounts of information stored on the web pages throughout the internet.

The only way search engines can determine what the human is looking for is to use an index of words. Yes, there are banner ads and other forms of ads, but it all translates back to the only way the information on the web pages can be displayed and being relevant if there is a key word index associated with the information provided.

I think the search engines are getting more and more sophisticated in being able to determine if the information on the web pages is relevant to the key words associated and I think they invest a great deal of time and energy to automate this and re-valuate the contents on the page against the keywords if either of it changes.

So.... I said all that to say this. Since this part is the most logical and most simple, now that everyone has a web page for themselves and their dog, any time you have a keyword search on a search engine returns millions and millions of pages. How do you get to place near the top based on these searches based on the keywords?

Well, obviously this is and will be the most proprietary information and strongest kept secrets of the search engines. So here's a few points.
1. We know that the SERP displays information in some form or another and it is not random otherwise every time you hit the search button on the same keyword the top 10 would shuffle at least a few times.
2. It is very obvious that the top 10 are all websites that are now more than ever relevant to the keyword you are searching. Of course if the keyword has different meanings you may or many not get the same results.
3. The more keywords you input the fewer search results.

Everyone that has a web page would love their page to come up first on a search result but we know that if a specific keyword has millions of results that at some point you will not be on Top 10 or even Top 1 million.

We do know however, that since it isn't either same search that is in top 10 all the time that some things must change. Well, what could change? The content of the page? How the search engine sees or ranks your page? How often your site gets clicked?

Remember the search engine has 2 objectives. To get you to click on something and then to get you to come back in the future and click on something else and then repeat this process. It is this objective that they must ensure 2 things. 1, the information you are looking for is relevant to what you are looking for so you have a pleasant search experience and find what you need and then hopefully click on something that generates revenue for them.
